Top Seeds Advance to Friday's Semifinal Round

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The top four seeds advanced on day one of the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling National Championships at Joe Retton Arena on the campus of Fairmont State University on Thursday.
 
With Thursday’s results, the semifinals will feature second-seeded Quinnipiac against third-seeded Gannon on Friday at 4:30, followed by top-seeded Baylor against No. 4 Oregon at 7 p.m.
 
Thursday’s action got underway with Quinnipiac picking up a 266.690 to 246.430 victory over Frostburg State. The second-seeded Bobcats won all six events and outscored the Bobcats 88.94-78.33 in team event. The Bobcats scored a meet-high 9.90 in the open pyramid and added a 9.725 in the six-element tumbling pass.
 
In the second quarterfinal, Gannon won each of the six events to advance to the semifinals. The Knights had eight scores of 9.60 or higher on Thursday, including a 9.90 in the open pyramid and a 9.750 in the compulsory toss and acro five-element.
 
In the third quarterfinal, Oregon topped Mary Hardin-Baylor by just over a three-point margin, with the teams splitting the six events. The Ducks grabbed enough of an advantage with victories in the toss (28.250-27.275) and tumbling (55.975-53.200) events to hold off a narrow UMHB advantage in team event (84.280-83.570).
 
Top-seeded Baylor capped the night with a 271.170-256.070 victory over host and eighth-seeded Fairmont State. The Bears won each of the six events and scored a 9.80 or higher in seven heats during the victory – including a meet-high 9.925 in both the compulsory toss and seven-element acro.
