NCATA Announces Award Winners, All-Americans
EUGENE, Ore. – A pair of awards were handed out and nine student-athletes earned All-America honors at the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association awards banquet on Wednesday night.
Fairmont State’s Krysta Kemp was named the NCATA Freshman of the Year and Oregon’s Felecia Mulkey was tabbed the NCATA Coach of the Year by her fellow coaches.
Kemp, a base from Logan, W.Va., keyed FSU’s stunt lineup to a season-high of 28.96 in the season finale against Oregon. She also anchors the tumbling event in the open heat, where she scored a season-high 9.5 on two occasions.
Mulkey led UO to a 6-1 regular season in the first season that the Ducks competed exclusively in the NCATA meet format. Under her tutelage, the Ducks have eclipsed 283 points in four consecutive meets. Oregon owns the nation’s top score with a 289.204 against Quinnipiac on March 21st and is seeded first in the tournament thanks to a 285.771 scoring average.
In addition to the award winners, No. 2 Maryland had a nation-high six athletes named to the 2011 All-American team. Season Daugherty, Ali Iovino, Danielle Jenkins, Samantha Johnson, Kaitlyn Letourneau and Lauren Shannon represented the Terrapins on the squad. Baylor’s Jayme Edwards and Madeline Felio also earned All-America status and Oregon’s Chelsea White rounded out the team.
To earn All-America status, athletes had to compete in every skill event in a minimum of two home and two away meets.
